What is environmentally friendly? Well I suppose anyone reading this will already know but what about those who don’t? Three years ago I didn’t know what it meant, I’d heard the phrase, eco warriors had sprung to mind and I’d dismissed it as being one of those things that I don’t do. I prefer to consider myself Holistic, I didn’t know what that meant either - pretty ignorant aren’t I? So how do we learn or more to the point how do we teach? How can we get people to change the way that they live? I don’t have a wind turbine, how I’d love to have a turbine, I don’t have an environmentally friendly car, how I’d love to be able to manage with no car, so what can I do to help the environment? Well I do the easiest things I can and I add new things to my list, my never ending list of things to help my environment.
The first step was buying Eco balls - I thought about every single household in the country and all the tons and tons of laundry being done on a daily basis, and all the tons and tons of washing powder being swirled around then whooshed down the drainpipe - where does it all go? Then I thought about the gallons of washing up liquid that joins it, shampoo, bubble bath, soap etc. I won’t go any further because it’s quite disturbing to think about all the chemicals that are washed down our drainage system daily. There is no doubt that the water is cleaned before it comes back to meet us in the form of drinking water but can we be really sure, I mean really really sure that all the toxic stuff is cleaned away? Our waterways are polluted, the fish we eat are swimming about in, well what seems like 100% toxic waste then served to us to eat. What exactly are we consuming when eat fish or when we drink a glass of water? We are told to drink at least 5 glasses of water a day - eughh, but we drink it because it is supposed to be healthy. So, it makes sense to stop sending so many chemically filled products down the drain pipe. It’s easy to clean using environmentally friendly products, if we have to bombard the water system with anything lets try to make it as natural as possible. It doesn’t have to be expensive to clean green, in fact it is cheaper, a lot cheaper.
It might take a little while to learn the recipes but with the know how a litre of vinegar and water cleaning spray can be made in the time it would take you to locate a bottle of spray cleaner on the supermarket shelves. Eco Balls for instance, I have been washing for a family of 6 for over two years with one set of Eco Balls that cost £35, if I estimate how much it would have cost to use powder this past two years which, is pretty difficult because I no longer know the price of washing powder I’d estimate that I just saved myself approximately £200, I have also saved shoving hmmm at a guess 120 kilos of washing powder down the drain? Not such a problem if you are using products like Ecover but how many times have I heard people complain about the prices of environmentally friendly products? Well it’s really easy, if more people bought them then the price would probably come down but really there is no excuse because green cleaning need not be expensive, isn’t expensive. Summer Naturals was launched in April 2006, it was designed to provide those who want to clean green the opportunity to purchase a list of ingredients in one place, along side of the ingredients such as White Vinegar, Bicarbonate of Soda and lemon Juice there are the ready to use products such as Soda Crystals and Eco Balls.
