san francisco pavement image Images via Polymaps This amazing Polymaps project from SimpleGeo and Stamen shows where San Francisco's roads are a little worse for the wear. The "Pavement Condition Index Map" illustrates the condition of the street pavement across the city, pointing out in a very visual way where the asphalt needs a little TLC. Why do we care? Because cities that have smooth, safe roads are better for bicyclists -- oh, and hypermilers too. Check out how the team pulled together the information. ... Read the full story on TreeHugger
tapi tap image Images via Dreamfarm The return of water fountains across cities has been the buzz lately, with places like London restoring old fountains and New York setting up new ones, though those are only temporary. girl-eating-watermelon-photo.JPG Photo via fruitforourchildren.com In May 2010, TreeHugger reported on the research linking pesticide exposure and ADHD in children. A study published recently in Environmental Health Perspectives by U.C. Berkeley School of Public Health researchers found that exposure of children to organophosphates while in utero may result in increased likelihood that the child will have ADHD. While the study does not prove that there is a causal link between pesticides and ADHD, it is not a stretch to think that organophosphates that attack the nervous systems of insects could also interfere... climate model image Image: UCAR One of the Primary Models Used by the IPCC As Freeman Dyson said, "The great advances in science usually result from new tools rather than from new doctrines." The telescope, the microscope, X-rays and MRIs, etc. Climate modeling software is such a tool, allowing us to make probabilistic estimates about what is likely to happen to our planet's if we do X or Y or Z. And while we can never be 100% sure about the future, our tools are getting more sophisticated (models take more things into account, faster computers allow more simulations to be run, better instruments and satellites allow better inf... open coal mine photo photo: Jennifer Woodard Maderazo via flickr TreeHugger has covered the uncomfortable and largely under-publicized topic of peak coal on a number of occasions, but David Roberts over at Grist just brought it up again--and it's a topic certainly worth revisiting as the future implications are great. I'll take the question out of R... Read the full story on TreeHugger
