ustpo logo photo Photo via Steve Snodgrass Back in December we learned that green tech companies were receiving a fast track through the US patent process in order to boost innovation among start-ups and innovators. The first 3,000 applicants would sail through the process in just 12 months, as opposed to 40 months. We asked if zipping through the patent process would really move green tech forward. Turns out, it doesn't. The fast track program is already off course for filling up the 3... Read the full story on TreeHugger
vintage circuit boards image Images via Wired We've seen our fair share of art made from circuit boards -- even a Mona Lisa made of motherboards. But the sculptures by artist Theo Kamecke take the cake. Using the beauty often overlooked in patterns and colors of circuitry, he creates some gorgeous pieces worthy of galleries. And even though the raw material is very much man-made, Kamecke says it still conjures up the beauty we see in who... Read the full story on TreeHugger
prius speaker image Image: Toyota WHIIIRRRRRR Toyota will be offering its Japanese customers an optional (for now) $150 device that makes its 3rd generation Prius hybrid easier to hear at low speeds. They call it the "Approaching Vehicle Audible System", and it basically makes whirring sounds that vary in pitch with the speed of the car up to 25 kph (check out the video below).... dry water photo photo: Ben Carter File this one in the maybe someday category: At the national meeting of the American Chemical Society scientists have presented work on the potential of so-called 'dry water' to store gases, with an eye to store carbon emissions as well as act as a fuel carrier. Here's the gist of it: ... Read the full story on TreeHugger
screen from shells image Image via engadget One of the major sticking points for making plastics from plants such as corn is that it takes a lot of fossil fuel and resources to grow a crop, just to turn it into plastic that is still difficult to recycle. The pros of plant-based plastics don't really out-weigh the cons. But what if bioplastic could be made from plant waste that is on hand anyway? That's what reserachers at NEC are hoping to create, having formed a plastic made from 70% plant waste, including stems and cashew nut shells.... Read the full story on TreeHugger
lightning strike photo Lightning shows us just how much electricity can accumulate in the atmosphere. Photo: Wikipedia, CC. Ride the Lightning It's still just a dream, but scientists are slowly getting us closer to the day when we might be able to collect electricity from thin air - or rather, humid air - in the atmosphere. They're not thinking of harnessing the power of lightning like in Back to the Future (where would you store such a massive influx of electricity?), but rather of collecting electricity from water vapor and dust particles. How would that work?... Read the full story on TreeHugger
solar voltaic bags image Images via Voltaic Systems We usually hear about new solar-charging bags from Voltaic Systems, known for its very high quality backpacks, laptop cases and messenger bags. However, the company is bringing us something new -- stand-alone chargers. They have three new models available, each boasting about four times the charging power of most solar chargers out there on the market. Voltaic states they can charge a smartphone in just 4-5 hours of direct sunlight, which is a fast charge by any account. It seems we might finally have small, personal chargers that make practical sense. ... Read the full story on TreeHugger
honda fit jazz hybrid photo Photo: Honda Patience is a Virtue Mentions of a hybrid version of the Honda Fit (known as the Jazz in most of the world) can be found as far back as 2006. Back then everybody thought that it was going to come out soon, but things turned out differently... But finally, for real this time, Honda is going to be debuting the Fit hybrid at the Paris Motor Show in September. Read on for more details.... Read the full story on TreeHugger
river-powered charger image Image via Earthtechling When we see personal chargers, they're almost always based on absorbing energy from the sun. Once in a great while, we also hear of new personal wind-powered chargers. But we almost never hear about water-powered personal chargers. This concept device, called the Vena Microhydro System by designer Danial Hull, bridges a gap in options for the outd... Read the full story on TreeHugger
