Toxic chemicals in baby products

What are you putting on your baby's skin?

We at Bamboo Baby (www.bamboobaby.co.uk) are launching a range of very natural cosmetics for babies and mummies. We believe babies (and mummies and everyone else too) should only use the minimum of natural products on their skin. We sell a very simple soap along with a range of pure oils and butters. No more nasty chemicals thanks!

We at Bamboo Baby (www.bamboobaby.co.uk) are launching a range of very natural cosmetics for babies and mummies. Our range would not contain any of the following harmful ingredients:

Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS)
Research has shown that SLS and SLES (Sodium Laureth Sulphate) may cause potentially carcinogenic nitrates and dioxins to form in the bottles of shampoos and cleansers by reacting with commonly used ingredients found in many products. Large amounts of nitrates may enter the blood system from just one shampooing. They can cause eye irritations, skin rashes, hair loss, scalp scurf similar to dandruff and allergic reactions. Industrial uses of SLS include engine degreasers and car wash soaps.

Propylene Glycol Stearate
This chemical alters skin structure, allowing other chemicals to penetrate deeper into the skin, increasing the amounts of other chemicals that reach the bloodstream. It has been linked with skin conditions such as eczema and dermatitis. Industrially, it is also found in antifreeze.

Parabens
The health concern regarding these chemicals suggest that they may alter hormone levels, possibly increasing risks for certain types of cancer, impaired fertility, or alteration of the development of a fetus or young child.

Mineral Oil
Mineral oil or liquid petrolatum is a by-product in the distillation of petroleum to produce gasoline. Most baby oils on the market contain mineral oil which is not absorbed into the outer layers of the epidermis, thus leaving a greasy film on the baby's skin and sealing the pores, this means that all the wonderful functions of the skin - excretion, heat regulation, absorption - will not be given the chance to work properly. Mineral oil should never be given internally to small children or anyone with a cough, hiatus hernia, or nocturnal reflux, and should NOT be swallowed. Due to its low density, it is easily aspirated into the lungs, where it cannot be removed by the body and can cause serious complications such as  pneumonia.  Mineral oil is not broken down by the body or used in the diet, so your baby sucking mineral oil soaked fingers is a very worrying thought.

According to the Cosmetics Ingredients Review, 2003, 100 per cent of the baby lotions studied contained ingredients, which had insufficient research backing their safety, and 59 per cent of products contained ingredients that were allergens. We are being bombarded by chemicals and babies are the most vulnerable to their effects.
