britain summer rain photo photo: Mike Dean/CC BY-SA While the summer of 2011 will go down as one of the hottest on record so far (if not the hottest) in the United States, as the variations in the effects of global warming have it, Britain is actually having its coolest summer since 1993. green jobs solar photo Image credit: Lauren Keith, used under Creative Commons license. When Bill McKibben called on the clean tech industry to stand up against the Keystone XL pipeline, he noted that the fossil fuel lobbies are working furiously to scupper the renewable energy revolution. One thing seems certain. As solar industries continue ferocious cost ... Read the full story on TreeHugger
wind turbines in fog photo photo: Scott Wilcoxson/CC BY A new report from the World Wind Energy Association tracks new wind power installations in the first half of 2011, with China, the United States and India leading the pack. Though new installations were lower in Germany and Spain, strong commitment to renewable energy in previous years means both rem... Read the full story on TreeHugger
They Even have a Kayak Commuter! Most of you probably know by now that Google isn't your average mega-corp. They like to do things their own way, and that includes getting their employees to work. The video above shows how they seem to encourage any way of commuting that isn't the individual car, from unicycles to pogo-sticks and kayaks (well, those are the weird ones -- most employees take the very comfortable bio-diesel shuttle buses with fast internet connections). "In total, the combination of the GFleet and our shuttles result in net annual savings of more than 5,400 metric tons of CO2. That's like taking over 2,000 cars off the roa... whale-protection-conservation-photo Photo: Flickr, CC The Least We Could Do You might have heard of the 80/20 rule. It says that in many cases, you can get about 80% of the result for 20% of the effort. Well, according to a study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, something similar might apply to the protection of marine mammal species. Of the 129 species of marine mammals on Earth, including seals, dolphins and polar bears, about 1/4 are facing extinction, but most of them could be saved if we ... Read the full story on TreeHugger
via internet science tech Earlier this week, Solyndra announced bankruptcy. The announcement is a blow not only for the solar technology we hoped the company could send flowing into the marketplace, but also for VCs who invested. Earth2Tech has a good post outlining just what a loss it could mean. "When hip cell phone startup Amp'd Mobile went bankrupt back in 2007, the company lost its venture capital investors about $360 million. When solar maker Solyndra files for bankruptcy (they're aiming for next week) it could lose close to three times that amount, or a... Read the full story on TreeHugger
biophotovoltaics1.jpgImages: London Design Week If you think powering your gadgets with plants sounds like a strange idea, think again. Scientists at Cambridge University are working with designers to develop the next generation of photovoltaics that harness the biological power of plant photosynthesis. To give a visual idea of how these biophotovoltaics (BPVs) may look like, doctoral candidate Paolo Bombelli collaborated with designers Alex Driver and Carlos Peralta to produce these intriguing concept designs, rang... nissan leaf back photo Photo: Flickr, CC Now You're Just Teasing Us... While the all-electric Nissan LEAF has apparently been selling thousands of units in the US and Japan, it looks like the July 2011 launch in Canada was mostly a paper launch. In a press release, Nissan revealed that their inventory of 2011 LEAFs for the country was all of 40 cars (4 per province?). Unless that's a typo or a misunderstanding, it seems pretty ridiculous. Hopeful... Read the full story on TreeHugger
liquid cremation resomation photo Image credit: Resomation This probably won't come as big news to most readers, but we are all going to die. And that's why finding sustainable ways to deal with human remains should be an important priority. From composting your corpse to a comprehensive look at how to green your funeral, we've explored this issue from numerous angles. But with death being such a complex, culturally-sensitive subject, it ... Read the full story on TreeHugger
