ipad photo Photo by khawkins04 via Flickr CC We've been hearing about some airlines switching all their inflight paper documents, from maps to manuals, onto iPads in an effort to save paper and weight. Now, the NFL is following suit. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have handed out iPads to each of the team's 90 players instead of hefty playbooks. ... Read the full story on TreeHugger
via internet science tech But Are Poachers Winning the War? It's always sad to hear about animal poaching, especially when it's endangered species that are being killed, and even moreso when the killing is caused by baseless superstitions. We have some tools to fight back against poachers, such as DNA forensics, protected conservation reserves, and education campaigns to teach people that their 'traditional medicines' are high-priced bunk, but we need to redouble our efforts before more species go completely extinct. By 2030 parts of the city may be underwater, with more than one million buildings, nearly all residential, subject to flooding of their ground floors for at least part of the year. ... Looking Back on an Environmental Tragedy It's been more than a year since the Deepwater Horizon oil rig blew up, releasing vast quantities of crude oil and natural gas into the Gulf of Mexico, but we're still trying to figure out exactly how much damage was done. A new study by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) e... Read the full story on TreeHugger
greenland-glacier-3.jpg Oblique view of the Petermann glacier front on 24 July, 2009 Jason Box Byrd Polar Research Center, Ohio State University via PhysOrg Greenland is melting. That's hardly a newsflash: retreating ice and vanishing glaciers in the Arctic have long been foremost among the most visible icons of global climate change. But the rate at which those glaciers are disappearing continues to shock scientists anew. This summer, a new crop of photos were taken of one such dissipating ice mass, the Petermann glacier. When lined up with photos taken on the same ... Read the full story on TreeHugger
